Jessica's Story

Learning should never stop! That's the reason why MAM offers ESL Summer Classes. This year we've used a new approach in the way we teach. Instructors are using Civics and life skills worksheets in every classroom to make classes more engaging; while at the same time, helping our students tackle everyday tasks, hands on! Jessica Dowdy, one of our volunteer teachers said, "Watching the students learn and engage in the process of learning words or concepts that can improve their quality of life is a great feeling." Jessica has been volunteering with MAM since 2012. She used to be a Corporate Trainer where she learned how to teach adult learners. She explains, "although I changed career paths, I enjoyed the experience and when the opportunity presented itself to teach I didn't hesitate to sign up." Jessica has taught level 1 and level 2 in the past. She is currently teaching our most advanced class, Conversation, at St. Thomas Presbyterian Church during the evening from 6:00pm-9:00pm. She told us that the students’ determination to learn is very inspiring and even after a long day of work, she looks forward to working with the students. She adds "What is most fascinating about the experience is learning the students' customs and cultures. I have learned so much from the students and hope that I can visit their countries one day."

Our ESL classes are so diverse that the Conversation class can be described as a melting pot of ideas. Students from different backgrounds interact together and help each other reach the same goal of becoming proficient in English.
